A SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN!

imgres

We had a SPOOKTACULAR Halloween celebration today!  A BIG THANK YOU to all the parents who helped organize and create this fun event for our classroom!  The kids truly enjoyed spending this time with you today and I can’t THANK YOU enough.

The kids had a great time wrapping each other like mummies!

Kids made a bookmark for a craft!  There were witches, werewolves, and Frankensteins!  The kids were so into making their bookmarks that they didn’t even notice their teacher taking pictures!  WOW!

They also made ghosts fly into buckets with a Peep Ghost toss!  Yes, we let them play with their food.  It was easy to get group shots on this one, so not as many photos!

We also had a YUMMY snack:  a cupcake topped with frosting and a candy corn, juice dressed like a mummy, monster, or ghost, and some delicious cheesy puffs!

We wish you all a SPOOKTACULAR Halloween as well.  Be safe while Trick-or-Treating!  Stay with an adult, use a flashlight, check your candy, and eat a few pieces at a time!

SCARECROW SIGHT WORD GAME

imgres                                                         Feed the Scarecrow  or Scarecrow Crunch

Your child is bringing home a fabulous game that will help them practice his/her sight words…we call them Popcorn Words in our classroom as they keep “popping up” in books that we read.

Please take the time to play the game with your child to make sure they are reading the sight words correctly.  The more your child reads the words, the more they will remember them which is our ultimate goal.  I am hoping that your child can read these words quickly when I assess him/her…in other words with 3 seconds…1…2…3 (That’s me counting in my brain!)

There are “TWO WAYS TO PLAY”.  Directions are on the front of the bag and we practiced in the classroom, so hopefully your child remembers.

The words your child should have are:

he     I     this    is     a     like    will     look     see     for     the     can

Your child should also have 3 cards that say “crunch”.  If your child lost any of the cards, you can simply make new ones on paper you have at home.  It doesn’t have to be red, yellow, or green.  And your child can always draw the apple!  He/she could write the word to for extra practice.  Make sure he/she uses lower case letters and spells it correctly.

We have also learned to read the words:     red     go          If you would like to add these words to your child’s bag, you may.

Thank you for spending time helping your child become the best reader he/she can be!

Walk-a-thon!

It was a very chilly Walk-a-thon day on Friday, but we made the best of it by moving, and shaking, and just trying to stay warm!  Students walked, jogged, dance walked around the bus loop to help raise money for Alward Elementary School.   A big THANKS to Mrs. Woodwyk for taking this picture as I left my ipad inside the building.

Thank you as well to all the parents who organized this event, helped your child collect donations, and/or attended the event.  We had LOTS of FUN and truly appreciate the extra effort you made to help Alward Elementary School!

WE are READERS!

We just finished up Unit 1 of readers workshop and had our reading celebration today!  Kids have been reading books from special star tubs that they have been sharing at their tables.

Today the kids graduated to book bags because they have become such AMAZING readers that they are now ready for their own baggie of books!  They were super excited to shop for books and make these today.

Here are posters showing all the things that we have learned that “GOOD READERS DO!”  Please have your child practice these skills at home when you are reading to them at night or when they are reading to you!

We will continue to practice these skills daily in our classroom as well.  It has been so much fun watching each of your children learn to LOVE BOOKS and learn how to be a good reader.  I can’t wait to continue this reading journey with them.

CONFERENCE SLIPS!

Fall conferences are quickly approaching!  Your child will be bringing home a note today for you to choose which day works best.  Please use the 1,2,3 as your first, second, and third choices as we are not always able to honor first requests.  I am hoping that with 21 students, that should not be a problem this year!  YEAH!

Please return the bottom of the slip on or before THIS FRIDAY!  Teachers will be meeting at early release time to schedule these conferences, so it is important that you have your slip returned on time.

I look forward to meeting with you all in November!

FIRE SAFETY WEEK!

Hi Everyone!

What a busy week we had at school last week!  Not only was it Hudsonville’s Homecoming Week, it was also Fire Safety Week!  We read LOTS of books about visiting fire stations and learning all about what fire fighters do.  We also learned some important fire safety rules:

*stay low and go

*make a safety plan

*stop, drop, and roll

*call 9-1-1

The Hudsonville Fire Department stopped by for a visit on Tuesday, October 4. They talked to us about matches/lighters, smoke detectors, and making a safety plan with our families at home.  They showed us what they look like when they are all dressed-up and ready to fight a fire.  We practiced yelling, “Help, Help, We are in here!”  so they would know we were trapped inside.  And they showed us all the COOL TOOLS that they use to fight fires, as well as their fire truck.  We even got to see the hose on the top of the truck shoot out water.  We wrote a story about it during writer’s workshop.  It was SO AMAZING!  Here are some photos of your children enjoying their time with the fire fighters.

BOOK IT by Pizza Hut

search

We have kicked off our “Pizza Hut Book It!” Program once again!  The “Book It!” Program is all about turning kids who read because they have to, into kids who read because they WANT to.  Through  “Book It!”, your child has the opportunity to earn a certificate for a free Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut by filling out the calendar that was sent home, and by meeting the monthly reading goals that were set.  Return this calendar to the library at the end of the month to receive this certificate.  There is no purchase necessary.  HAPPY READING!
